What is octocrylene and why is it important in solar products?
Octocrylene is an organic filter used in sunscreens to protect the skin from sun damage, as it mainly absorbs UVB radiation, and also short UVA radiation, which causes premature skin aging and also skin cancer.
In recent times it has been pointed out as an endocrine disruptor and possible photosensitizer. However, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) recognizes it as safe at the maximum authorized concentrations, and rules it out as a photosensitizer.
At Agrado we use it in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council on cosmetic products, whenever necessary in the recommended dose.
